Heathcote Homestead: The Many Moods of Brockton

Brad McLennan has spent years working with the details that make a design feel considered. Alongside his fashion career, he and his partner have renovated holiday homes, building a practical understanding of planning, construction and what makes a space work. His appearance on House Rules in 2020 brought that design sensibility to a wider audience, but the move into interiors had been developing long before then.

Together, their latest project, The Homestead in Heathcote, brings those experiences together. Nearly a decade in the making, the property began with the renovation of an existing American-style barn before evolving into a much larger vision: a home that would respond to its country setting and be the holiday homestead of their dreams.

Signature was delighted to collaborate on Brad’s latest project where the brief required three luxuriously dense plush carpets in modern hues that would suit the character of each distinct bedroom. Rather than one dominant master suite, each bedroom has been designed as an equally considered space, with its own colour palette and personality.

Brad chose Brockton from the Harlow Collection. Available exclusively at Choices Flooring stores, this carpet range is as soft as you can get and boasts bold on-trend accent colours as well as subtle neutrals. Choosing three colours from the same carpet range gives each bedroom in the Homestead a consistent feel while the colour choices give different vibes.

WHITNEY: A show-stopping diva in burgundy.

Step into this bedroom and it’s the ‘Whitney’ carpet that sets the tone before anything else does – a rich, deep wine-inspired tone becomes the anchor for the entire palette, echoed in the cork-clad accent wall, the window dressing, and the checked wool throw folded across the bed. It’s a masterclass in tonal layering: rather than competing for attention, each element – from the sculptural black side table to the soft blush and white bedding – is chosen to sit comfortably together.

DOUCETTE: A soft sage for calm thoughts.

Same styling, different vibe: this room leans into a soft, muted sage-green carpet that gives the whole space a calmer, more restrained feel. ‘Doucette’ is the perfect quietly grey-green shade to balance the rooms accents: the heavy curtains, the textured cushions, and the wool checked throw all sit a few shades darker, while the warm cork-panelled wall and walnut bedside table bring in a natural, textural counterpoint. The carpet doesn’t shout for attention here – instead it grounds the space, letting the richer greens and warm timber do the talking while it quietly ties the whole palette together underfoot.

WHITMAN: A classic neutral for a reliable foundation.

This room takes a playful turn from its Homestead siblings, with a bold striped ceiling stealing the first glance – a graphic charcoal-and-white awning stripe that sets a confident, boutique-hotel tone before you even look down. Underfoot, the light dove-grey ‘Whitman’ carpet keeps things grounded, its soft neutral tone acting as a quiet canvas that lets the room’s real personality play out above it. This allows the furnishings to really shine – a terracotta-upholstered headboard that anchors the bed, the plaid wool throw and the tan leather bench pick up that same warm rust note, while the carpet stays deliberately understated – never competing, just giving the whole mix a calm, cohesive floor to stand on.
